Improving diagnosis in medicine through education in clinical reasoning at all levels, from students to faculty, and creating a culture where errors and successes can be discussed openly and education to improve diagnosis can thrive.

Welcome to the Clinical Center for Medical Decision Making. Our mission is to improve diagnosis in medicine through education in clinical reasoning at all levels, from students, to residents, to faculty. Founded in 2012 by Dr. William Follansbee, the Center has developed multiple robust educational programs including an online curriculum in medical decision-making, a very popular monthly “thinking out loud” clinical reasoning conference series, a monthly online series of clinical case puzzles, and a two-year certificate program for residents who wish to acquire advanced skills in the field of clinical reasoning. The Center strives to be an academic home for faculty and residents with interest in diagnostic error and clinical reasoning research as well as a source of educational materials for those wishing to hone their own medical decision-making skills. Most importantly of all, faculty within the Center work to create a culture of clinical reasoning at the University of Pittsburgh, where errors and successes both can be discussed openly and education to improve diagnosis can thrive.

Thank you for your interest,
